Biography

Melissa Skillern joined Skillern Firm in May of 2011. She has truly worn almost every hat in our firm except for lawyer. Working as a receptionist, legal assistant, paralegal and now office manager for Skillern Firm’s two office locations, she truly has a unique perspective of how to make our law firm more efficient and provide the best customer service for our clients.
Melissa still assists the office with drafting pleadings, reviewing client documents, drafting and responding to discovery, from inception through discovery and trial in addition to managing all of our billing and account payables.

She has been a licensed Notary Public for 9 years and completes continuing education courses and seminars within the field of Family and Civil Law. Melissa’s enthusiasm for learning new things keeps her up-to-date and allows her to assist clients during difficult times. In 2019 Melissa joined the forces of an elite group of lawyers, paralegals and judges who lead their profession by being accepted into the State Bar College. This is a great honor as there are currently only 104 paralegals accepted into the Texas Bar College throughout Texas. Melissa is a member of the State Bar of Texas and in 2019 received her Board Certification in Family Law joining only 169 other paralegals across the entire State of Texas.

In 2014 Melissa created the Texas Paralegals on Facebook and has grown the group to 2,000 members. Texas Paralegals quickly became a great resource for paralegals as well as attorneys. Melissa hosts events and assists paralegals in finding work and lawyers finding employees. In 2019 Melissa joined the Board of Directors for Houston Metropolitan Paralegal Association as their Social Chair. She successfully put on numerous events and is working with the board to grow the associations memberships and grow their presence in Family Law.

In 2017 Melissa was recognized as the First Runner Up for Paralegal of the Year 2017 with the Houston Metropolitan Paralegal Association. Melissa also has a unique prospective and compassion for family law cases as she has had a personal case that went all the way to trial and understands the stress and complexities that litigation stirs up.

Beyond the office doors, Melissa loves spending her time with her daughter Aubrey and those she has inducted into her “Tribe”. Melissa takes on several service projects each year and volunteers many hours helping our community. She also enjoys being the room mom for her daughter’s class, attending kid friendly events and vacationing with her daughter.
